Effects of Exchangeable Ca:Mg Ratio on Soil Clay Flocculation, Infiltration and Erosion

It was found that Ca2+ ions were more effective than Mg2+ in aggregating soil clays. These results supported by differences in infiltration and erosion between Ca and Mg treatement for two out of four studied soils. Practically, this research provides further evidence to explain differences in infiltration by varying the Ca:Mg ratio. It can be used to prevent future problems through selection of appropriate liming material. To remediate an existing problem the application of gypsum as a source of electrolytes and Ca can be used. It has proved to be effective for studied soils on reducing erosion and improving water entry.
