What crops benefit most from GYPSOIL?

In the Southeast, GYPSOIL is commonly used in peanut production.  However, GYPSOIL is beneficial for all crops because it improves the soil’s ability to provide a healthy environment for plant roots. It can take one to two years to realize the full benefit of using GYPSOIL as a soil amendment.

Plants that have specific needs for calcium, like peanuts, or sulfur typically respond more quickly to applications of GYPSOIL.

How much GYPSOIL will I need?

For peanut production, rates depend on the variety of peanut grown and whether you are producing seed peanuts.  Typical GYPSOIL rates for peanuts are as follows:

Virginia peanuts: 1,000-2,000 lbs/acre

Large-seeded Runners:  If pegging zone calcium is < 500 lbs/acre, apply 1,000 lbs/acre

Seed peanuts (all large seeded varieties): 1,000 lbs/acre or more or seed contract requirement

For soil amendment, apply GYPSOIL at a rate of one to two tons per acre every one to two years.  For sulfur only, typical rates are 300 to 500 lbs. per acre but growers often opt for the higher rates to achieve both benefits.

Does GYPSOIL replace liming?


Lime is used to adjust the soil’s pH. GYPSOIL offers a host of other benefits that enhance soil structure and improve the release of nutrients to the crop but GYPSOIL does not alter soil pH.

How do I apply GYPSOIL?

Apply GYPSOIL using equipment designed to spread bulk materials (such as lime, litter, etc.).  Be sure equipment is in good repair and set up properly to broadcast the material. Read more about application tips.

Who can apply GYPSOIL?

Do I need any special permitting to use GYPSOIL?


No. GYPSOIL is in full compliance with all land application regulations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Wisconsin.

Is GYPSOIL water-soluble?


Yes. GYPSOIL is water-soluble and will move down through the soil profile depositing calcium into the pegging zone.  GYPSOIL will also move deeper into the soil profile over time.  USDA research shows that, within two years, water-soluble calcium and sulfur from surface-applied gypsum are present at 36-inch depth.

Can I cut back on my fertilizer if I use GYPSOIL?


Possibly. It depends upon your farming practices, soil conditions, growing environment, etc. Typically, soils where biological systems are active  -- when soil microbes are effectively at work breaking down organic matter and making humus - plants and soil will require less supplemental fertilizing.

Is GYPSOIL a fertilizer?

Yes, GYPSOIL supplies calcium and sulfur, essential nutrients for many plants including peanuts.  A typical analysis for GYPSOIL (dry weight basis) indicates GYPSOIL supplies 22% calcium and 16 percent sulfur. GYPSOIL is also used a soil amendment that loosens up hard, compacted soil and allows water and plant roots to reach farther down into the soil profile. The biological systems also release and balance soil nutrients for the crop.

How do I know if my GYPSOIL is working?


For crops requiring specific, high levels of calcium, such as peanuts and potatoes, problems associated with calcium deficiencies are avoided with proper calcium supplementation. Read more

Generally, you will experience softer soils within 12 months of application, depending upon your farming practices and soil condition. Many growers report their fields show improved water infiltration with less ponding and quicker drying after just one application.

Growers often report seeing immediate crop quality and yield improvements after GYPSOIL applications in fields where sulfur depletion was evident.

Is there any research data on Gypsum?


Yes. The USDA, various university research centers and other organizations around the world have done extensive research on the effects of gypsum on soil structure, soil and water quality and crop production.  Check out our Research Library.

Will my yields improve with GYPSOIL?


Having elevated levels of supplemental calcium in the top one to two inches of soil helps pods and kernels develop, according to peanut production experts.  It is critical to avoid pops, pod rot and black heart or germination in seed peanuts.   Read more in the Peanut Grower, April 1, 2011 article:  “Calcium is King” article here.

GYPSOIL supplies changes soil structure to allow for better crop performance. Yield response depends upon the whole management system and what the limiting factors are. With good management, better soils consistently produce higher yields.

Some production sites allow you to arrange your own delivery. Some, however, limit the number of trucking companies that can enter their facility; in these cases, GYPSOIL would arrange delivery to your farm.
