The objective of this article is to review issues related to: (i) the physiological and engineering considerations of gypsum; (ii) its role in soil genesis, the flaws in formulation and analysis; (iii) some proposed methods (thermogravimetry, chemical, and X-ray) for routinely determining the gypsum content of sediments and soils; (iv) the concept of equivalent gypsum content, and (v) prospects for future research.
